The Archivist is responsible for managing and making accessible the archival collections at one of the largest horological libraries in the world. The archives include 21,000 American patents; postcards dealing with horological subjects; postal stamps showing timekeeping devices; papers, ledgers, and drawings from the Hamilton Watch Company and other notable watch and clock companies; the Whitaker Westclox collection; and the personal papers of such noted horologists as Jesse Coleman, Orville Hagans, Barclay Stephens, Robert Franks, James W. Gibbs, Albert Potter, and Charles Alvah Smith. The archives are used by all types of researchers both remotely and on-site.
This is a full-time position reporting to the Library & Archives Supervisor. The archivist’s primary responsibility will be to provide access to the archival collections by preserving, processing, documenting, cataloging, digitizing, and promoting existing and incoming collections. In addition the archivist will participate in the library’s reference service and work with researchers in person, over the phone, and by email. A rotating weekend schedule and some holidays are required.
Primary responsibilities
Process, document, and catalog archival collections
Assess current collections and make recommendations for improvements
Recommend materials for preservation and conservation
Create a long term plan for maintaining and providing access to the collections
Supervise volunteers and interns
Answer reference questions over the phone, by email and in person
Promote the archival collections on the museum’s social media.
Required Qualifications
Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited program with a concentration in archives or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to work with researchers of all types, including scholars, teachers, students, enthusiasts, and genealogists.
Demonstrated understanding of current trends and emerging technologies in archives and special collections
Ability to work independently and collaboratively with other departments
Ability to lift items of 25 pounds or more. Ability to stand or kneel for long periods of time. Ability to stand on and move rolling ladder and reach items on upper library shelves.
Preferred Qualifications
Professional experience in a research collection
Experience supervising volunteers and/or interns
Experience with PastPerfect Museum Software
Knowledge of horological history and technology
