Dear colleagues,
with apologies for the shameless self-promotion I wanted to let you
all know that my book „Managing Previously Unmanaged Collections – A
Practical Guide for Museums“ is now published by Rowman & Littlefield.
This book is a step-by-step guide to managing a previously unmanaged
collection as well as a tool for those who have to tackle a certain
amount of backlog, accession a collection that is large in numbers or
make sense of some kind of chaotic collection management inherited
from a predecessor.
From a first assessment of the situation to securing the collection
physically, from the first sorting to a documentation and collections
care strategy, from the first wave of tidying to a complete storage
master plan, this book provides an overview of what to do and when to
do it. It always keeps in mind that most museums are limited in money,
staff and time. It is written for the colleague who might be the only
museum professional within the next few hundred miles. It keeps in
mind that he or she has a variety of different tasks to perform and
can’t work on the collection continuously. Therefore it creates
“logical exits”, steps at which it is safe to stop the collections
work for a certain amount of time without risking that everything done
so far was useless. Wherever possible, it points to useful references
and available resources.
The book is available via the website of Rowman & Littlefield (see
flyer on this website:

you.
Best wishes
