Exhibitions Intern - Getty Mulitcultural Undergraduate Summer Internship

POSITION SUMMARY:

Dates of Internship: June 17 – August 23, 2014. Will require some evening & weekend hours. Regular workweek is Tuesday – Saturday. Intern Stipend: $4000 gross for Full-Time (40 hours/week), consecutive 10-week internship. The intern will receive hands-on training from Museum staff and volunteer trainers for specific duties and responsibilities of the internship. In addition, the Museum's volunteer docents will introduce the intern to the history and work culture of the National Museum as well as the history of Americans of Japanese ancestry. Training and assigned work will progress over 10 consecutive weeks, culminating in the presentation of completed work to project staff during the final week. The intern’s workspace will be in the Curatorial Unit. S/he will also work outside of the office as necessary.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Exhibitions Intern for the Japanese American National Museum will work primarily on the upcoming major exhibition “Hello! Exploring the Supercute World of Hello Kitty.” Responsibilities will include developing written content for exhibition text panels, labels and collateral; assisting with licensing requests, collections support for incoming loans and processing artifacts; and scanning/editing materials. In addition, the Intern will be assigned work related to the Museum’s permanent historical exhibition, “Common Ground: The Heart of Community” and a future exhibition drawing from JANM’s permanent collection. The intern will support the work on the Curatorial and Collections Management & Access (CMA) Units, with the 40 hours/week schedule evenly divided between these units.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Qualification Requirements: Criteria for Intern Candidates: The internship opportunities are intended for outstanding students who are members of groups currently underrepresented in careers related to museums and the visual arts: individuals of African American, Asian, Latino/Hispanic, Native American, or Pacific Islander descent. Intern candidates can be sought from all areas of undergraduate study and are not required to have demonstrated a previous commitment to the visual arts. In addition, each intern candidate must meet the following eligibility criteria: (1) be a currently enrolled undergraduate and have completed at least one semester of college by June 2014. Students graduating in May or June 2014 are also eligible; (2) Reside or attend college in Los Angeles County; and (3) be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident. Please note that students who have previously served as Getty Multicultural Undergraduate summer interns at the Japanese American National Museum are not eligible for consideration. Students enrolled in a second BA or BS program are not eligible. Experience/Knowledge: Experience working in research and developing written content desired but not mandatory, Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, scanners, and interest in working in a non-profit or museum setting.

Media Arts Intern: The Media Arts Intern for the Japanese American National Museum will participate in the development of media elements for the National Museum's upcoming exhibits, educational programs, website and YouTube Channel. Examples of the assignment include: videography and editing of public programs that feature world-renowned scholars, artists, musicians and community activists; research, production assistance and transcription of life history interviews with notable Japanese Americans; and design and implementation of motion graphic elements for short video productions that will be broadcast on local television and featured on the Museum's websites {www.janm.org, www.discovernikkei.org, and janmstore.com}, which receive more than 800,000 unique visitors annually.

The Production Intern will work closely with the Art Director and Production Assistant/Graphic Designer in the production department to design and produce JANM’s annual Group Visit & Educator Programs booklet, which is used to promote school tours through the following year. Additionally, this individual will support production needs for upcoming exhibitions, public programs and PR/Marketing requests for the Museum in general, as well as provide maintenance support for our core exhibition “Common Ground: The Heart of Community.”

Experience/Knowledge: Fine Arts, Design or Architecture background. Strong Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and/or Illustrator skills. Interest in learning about working in the arts.
