I think Frank has a great idea and was along the lines I was thinking while reading your post and replies.  

If the object isn't currently on view, you could arrange to have it on view for a set period of time or for a "special viewing"--which could turn into a fundraiser of sorts --if you work it right.  Behind the scenes tours regarding these specific donor's might be helpful in explaining the importance of collection's care.  Also if you have a collection's committee, they should be able to back you up and act as a buffer, to your one "no!"  

I also agree with the reference to IRS and AAM's best practices and standards.

I should add depending on the object, I have installed off-site exhibits in secure locations, ie a bank lobby, a library.  All objects in a secure case for no more than a month.  These locations had to go through facility reports just like a museum would.
