The Indiana State Museum has a continually functioning Collections Review Committee that meets monthly to approve donations and purchases. The committee also oversees other activities within the Collections Department and monitors policy implementation. The committee is made up of department members from the cultural and natural history sections along with education and conservation department representatives and a permanent representative from our historic sites system. The committee reports to various administrators but no administrators sit on the committee. All members have voting privileges and all members serve for two years. A committee chairperson is selected for each new year from within the standing committee. This set up was originally suggested by the AAM and has worked well for our institution, which is a general museum with approximately one million artifacts in its collections.

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] Collection Committees?

Dear Listserver's--

A few questions about Collection Committees

1a. Do you have one? 1b.)Ad Hoc or continually functioning?

2a.) Whom is on it? 2b.) If you have board members or community experts, how often do these members change?

3.) Does everyone have voting privileges or are some advisory only?

4.) How often does the committee meet?

3.) reporting hierarchy: ie, does the committee report to the board on their actions or does the Executive Director?

I am re-writing our CMP and need to address our collections committee, which exists as an Ad Hoc Committee. I have four CMP samples from AAM, but feel I need more input with hopes to craft a committee for our specific institution.

Many Thanks for your time on answering these questions.
