Centennial: Science Research @ Mellon Institute

Products ranging from antifreeze and synthetic rubber to casings that allow hot dogs to be mass produced, and even the bouncy toy Silly Putty as an accidental discovery, were developed at the Mellon Institute of Industrial Research, which celebrates its centennial this month. In 1967, Mellon Institute merged with the Carnegie Institute of Technology to form Carnegie Mellon University.
