John,
I would like to second what Brian said (I guess "third" if you count
Dana!). I think the number of JHU graduate students who are on this
list-serve show that we are an engaged bunch! I am only in my second
semester in the program, but as a working professional with 17 years under
my belt, I can honestly say that the reason I chose this particular
program is a combination of the information/ideas presented, the readings
that the courses have covered and the access/connections to some of the
top professionals in the museum field. As Brian has already pointed out,
an added bonus is that I have been able to apply the things that I have
studied thus far directly and immediately to my professional practice. In
fact, I just presented a paper at a conference on a project that I
implemented at work - a project that started as a result of my coursework
in Phyllis Hecht's course last Fall. Her input on that project was
integral in its success. That kind of tangible resource is at the heart of
what makes JHU so great.
Wesley does bring up a good point about experience, but I the reality of
it is that for even lateral movement in the field, my many years of
experience would not allow me to make it past the first HR cut. It is for
that reason and the pursuit of the knowledge that this course of study
will grant me that I am moving forward with the JHU program.
Best of luck to you,
Mary Mikel Stump
