Subject: [MUSEUM-L] Most inspirational house museum?

The first place that comes to mind (almost instantly) is the Museum of
African American History in Boston, which occupies the old African American
Meetinghouse on Beacon Hill. It houses the printing press that William Lloyd
Garrison used to print his abolitionist papers. Even the memory of the
instant I realized what that press was, and its historic heritage, raises
the hair on my arms.

Moreover, that building and its singular treasure trumps the view from
Chesterwood, the summer home and studio of Daniel Chester French (sculptor
of Lincoln in the Lincoln Memorial) in the Berkshire Mountains of Western
Massachusetts, where I worked and enjoyed the view for three years. What
French called ³the best dry view anywhere² (i.e., not a water view) brought
him to that spot, and one has to value the discernment of the artist who
became the Dean of American Sculpture upon the passing of Augustus
Saint-Gaudens.
