Aaron,
Wow - what a tough assignment for the intern!

I'd be more than happy to help you get through it, but you and your managers need to begin with a very clear understanding of what "maintaining the integrity of race car (sic)" means.

For instance, the policies for preserving a race car in a static setting differ wildly from a car that is still started and run, even if it's driven only for parade laps, or show placement. If your policy will refer only to static display and long term preservation/conservation, then your policies might read like those that pertain to multi-media art pieces. Each car will need to be inventoried, piece by piece, to determine what materials are used where, how those materials are connected, and how they might react to each other over time(e.g. aluminum and dissimilar metals=corrosion; magnesium and glycol based coolants=corrosion, etc). Individual parts may need to be drained, cleaned, and treated for preservation. Brakes, for example, require a process that involves more than just draining the fluid, as each caliper should be dis-assembled, cleaned, and re-assembled with the proper preservative applied to all components. You'll need the assistance of someone who knows your type of cars to make the proper determination regarding materials, and of course, someone who knows how to work on them.

And that's just the beginning...

For the cars that will need to remain operational, then proper starting/warmup/driving procedures, preventative maintenance/repair procedures, and safety guidelines take the policy in a different direction.

Good luck; feel free to contact me off-list.
Tom.

Subject: Conservation and Preservation Policy for cars or race cars?

I am an intern for the Nascar Hall of Fame and I have been given a car preservation/conservation project. The Hall of Fame wants to write a policy that allows for appropriate display, while maintaining the integrity of race car. Our institution would like to gain insight into short and long term display and storage of automobiles. If you have any collection policies for your institution, please feel free to post them or e-mail them to me at: [log in to unmask]

y managers would like to review these policies when constructing one for the Hall of Fame. If you have any recommendations on professional publications or manuals that the Hall of Fame could look into, that would be greatly appreciated as well. Lastly, do you have any particular training or requirements for your staff?
