Hi listers,

I am working on getting a historic school in my community restored.
Everything is still very much in the planning stages, but I've
encountered a problem.

The structure is connected to a non-historic structure and both
buildings are owned by a local church that is renting it to an
organization that helps abused women. This group wants to use the
non-historic part of the complex to house the abused women and
possibly use the historic structure as a chapel and offices.

I have a group of people together who are trying to have the historic
structure restored to its original state. We've worked out a solution
where the shelter would use the non-historic part and a seperate
non-profit would control the historic structure and possibly rent it
to the shelter for use as classrooms and a meeting space, with the
possibility of public tours. Members of the local historical society
and the women's shelter would be represented on a joint board of
directors.

Some people involved with the women's center are concerned about the
possible breach of privacy if the building is restored. I have tried
to work with them on a solution that would allow for restoration and
preservation as well as giving them as much privacy as possible.

I should say as a post script that the women's shelter at the moment
is using neither part of the property, and restoration of the school
is very much just a thought at the moment.

What are your thoughts on the matter?
