JOB OPENING: MUSEUM DIRECTOR/CURATOR

The Fort Larned Historical Society, owner and operator of the Santa Fe Trail Center Museum/Library in
Larned, Kansas is seeking a self-motivated, organized and energetic individual as Director/Curator. The
Director/Curator is in charge of all paid staff at the museum and is responsible for daily operations including
event and exhibit planning, recruitment of volunteers, oversight of properties belonging to the Historical Society
and promotion of the museum. The Director/Curator will work closely with the Board of Directors and all
board committees. The Director/Curator will also assist the Society in maintaining accreditation for the Santa
Fe Trail Center Museum.

The curatorial responsibilities of this position shall be to process, catalogue and care for items in the museum’s
three-dimensional collections, archives and research library. This includes the responsibility for all matters
related to the collections such as acquisitions, loans, documentation, preservation and oversight of the program
to digitize archival materials. Duties also include reviewing and making recommendations for all exhibition
and collections management policies and procedures.

Collections & Facility Information:
The museum’s collections contain over 35,000 objects, including historical, archival and archaeological. The
historical objects are related to the Santa Fe Trail era and to the early 1900’s period of settlement. Settlement
artifacts include farming, business, household and recreational. The archives consist of over 7,000 photographs,
2,300 Glass Magic Lantern slides, manuscripts, diaries, and early day school records, voting records, and papers
from businesses and organizations. Also housed are county records and records from the Santa Fe Trail
Association. The facility includes the 26,000 square foot museum building with an exhibition space of
approximately 7,000 square feet. The ten acres of outdoor exhibit space include reproduction and historic
buildings as well as two new exhibition buildings.

Museum & Community Information:
The Santa Fe Trail Center is an American Association of Museums accredited history museum telling the story
of the transportation route once known as the Santa Fe Trail. The exhibits show this freighting trail during its
commercial days and through the time of settlement along the ruts of the old trail. The museum is located just
outside the small rural community of Larned, Kansas, a town of 4,000. The museum is two miles from Larned
and four miles from Fort Larned National Historic Site, operated by the National Park Service. Larned is 120
miles from Wichita, KS, 300 miles from Kansas City, MO and 400 miles from Denver, CO.

Education & Experience Requirements:
A master’s degree in museum studies or related field is desirable. Alternatively, a four-year bachelor degree
with education and experience in museum management and collections management, preservation and security
is acceptable. Knowledge of PastPerfect as well as digitization experience is beneficial. Knowledge of Western
history is a plus for this position and the ability to work with researchers, other staff members, the museum’s
board of directors and committees as well as the general public is necessary. Candidates must be capable of
precise and detail-oriented work, have good written, verbal communication and supervisory skills. Computer
skills are required and grant writing experience is desirable.

Application Information:
This is a full time, permanent position with a starting base salary of $25,000 yearly. A higher starting salary is
possible depending upon education and experience. Health insurance benefits are not offered by the Historical
Society. The position will be filled when the ideal candidate has been identified. A starting date of January 1,
2012 is anticipated. Application review will begin November 1, 2011 and continue until the position is filled.
