Overview
The Paris Mint, an Industrial and Commercial Public Institution, is responsible for the printing of the national currency, but is also involved in the commercial production and sale of currencies, collecting of medals and decorations, art and jewellery creation, management of the Mint Museum of Paris , maintenance of the Mint, and the ongoing fight against counterfeiting.
Through its key project, MetaLmorphosis, the Paris Mint is redeveloping and highlighting its Paris site. This project, which illustrates the important transformation of industrial, commercial and cultural life of the oldest French institution, aims to make the Paris Mint an important "living heritage" within Paris through:
• A major architectural project: creation of passageways inside the building, a garden and modernization of the premises;
• The creation of a new place to live: famous chef Guy Savoy will open a restaurant and cafe “MétaLcafé”;
• Modernization of cultural events and exhibitions site;
• The creation of a "crafts passage", replacing the current Mint Museum, which will demonstrate and enhance the expertise of the Mint of Paris’ involvement withmetal work.
In order to create a strong image and to differentiate the site and the brand of the Paris Mint, the institution wishes to develop and affirm a cultural artistic policy through temporary exhibitions. The Paris Mint aims for national and international recognition.
To implement this artistic policy, the Paris Mint is currently seeking to recruit an Artistic Director.
Position Purpose
He / She will be responsible for developing and supporting the leadership of the Paris Mint in the definition and implementation of the artistic and cultural program of temporary exhibitions starting September 2012.
Key responsibilities
The activities of the Artistic Director are in the following three main areas: strategy, expertise and advice.
Directly reporting to the CEO of the Paris Mint, the Artistic Director develops and oversees the guidelines firthe temporary exhibitions program of the Paris Mint and advises senior staff of the institution.
He / She can curate some of these exhibitions and is in charge of each exhibition budget.
He / She will provide leadership and coordination of internal and external teams dedicated to the production of such exhibitions.
Responsible for the content and implementation of cultural events, he/she will collaborate with Monnaie de Paris staff.
He / She represents the Paris Mint in external relationships.
He/ she is a member of the Cultural Committee of the Paris Mint. He/she presents her/his projects to the committee for approval.
This cultural and artistic program aims at giving more visibility to the Paris Mint nationally and internationally. It will position the institution in terms of culture.
Qualifications:
- Advanced degree in art history or equivalent Master's level;
- Extensive knowledge of contemporary art;
- Extensive knowledge of crafts and know-how;
- Extensive knowledge of design and architecture;
- Extensive knowledge and understanding of contemporary photography;
- Sensitivity to the institution, the Paris Mint brand, , its history and its areas of activity;
- Influence within the modern and contemporary art community internationally and good networks among museum professionals and private actors (major exhibitions, private collectors);
- Successful track record in exhibition curatorial work;
- Sound business planning skills, including experience in the planning of budgets and risk management (team management, budget, schedule, technical and legal support, communication and so on);
- Ability to create and implement a cultural and artistic program meeting strategic guidelines and objectives of the institution;
- Good network among professionals for exhibition production;
- Fluent in English both oral and written;
- Clear thinking and solutions focused – able to manage competing demands, make effective decisions and able to think creatively to come up with solutions to problems;
- Good communication skills;
- Excellent project management skills;
- Good negotiation skills;
- Strong understanding of key informatics tools;
- 5 year experience minimum;
Strengths:
- Proficiency in one or more foreign languages in addition to English;
- Significant professional experience within a major Art institution;
- Experience within a public cultural institution;
- Ability to foster the Paris Mint identity through its cultural program;
- Established network in the world of art and international contemporary art.
