Hi Marc,

I forwarded your question re: solid state media players to our time based media coordinator here at the Hirshhorn, and she recommended:

Akman VR4 Solid State Video players- these use SanDisk cards to read the information, I am not sure of the price http://www.akman.com/

Hope that helps,

Debra,

You may want to contact your state historical agency and the
Winterthur Museum/University of Delaware. The staff at the Winterthur
are very knowledgeable about disaster recovery. Some of them came
down to Mississippi after Katrina and held a workshop that was one of
the best I've ever been to.

We are considering updating our gallery lighting, since our current system dates from the 1960s. The University would like us to use LumeLex 2040 series which uses LED lights. Has anyone had any experiences using this system in exhibit galleries?

I know this question is probably one of the 6 questions that gets recycled all the time, but I could use your (great) input regarding what you have used as effective resources for getting volunteers. I am a curator at a history museum where we staff the permanat gallery with volunteers at the reception desk near the front door for 4 hour shifts, each committ to once a week. Many love that time that they use for themselves to read, write, do follow up study notes on "last night's bible study" or their homework. Others like us to give them work to do from the archives upstairs. Either way, it's an important job, though not always the most exciting because anyone who walks in the door must see this person first. Part concierge, part security, part museum gift shop sales "employee," part basic "tour guide." We have used the usual resources and I need some fresh ideas. Can you help?

Best,

Laurie

Hi Laurie,

I'm had success by contacting the HR departments of local businesses and
asking if I can do 1 or both:

1. give him or her flyers to make available to employees and put in their
packets for retirees or people who are being laid off (I know, sounds
morbid);
2. bring a pie and come out during a lunch hour for a bagged lunch informal
presentation about the museum and volunteer opps.

My first suggestion would be to contact your local Volunteer Center. Also use resources like Volunteer Match and Idealist. Make your postings interesting. You can also recruit from local civic and corporate organizations. Hope that helps!

Do any of these have an internal memory?...meaning after you load the

flash memory and you can unplug the USB thumb drive?

Hi, Marc

We use media players all the time. They're inexpensive, easy to set up
and use (I use USB thumb drives for content), play large files, and loop
the video. There are many out there and I've purchased several different
models. But obviously make sure the one you get plays the formats you
need.

I've been happy with all three of these:

ViewSonic VMP70

iomega ScreenPlay TV Link HD Media Player

great if they have the possibility of changing content through a SD Card

For a particular installation we have used BrightSign sign controllers

Are there any cheaper alternatives out there?...simply something that

Do any of you have some suggestions?

Your help would be greatly appreciated...

Hi, Marc

To be quite honest, removing the thumb drive and leaving the file on the
media player isn't something I've been concerned enough with to try. It's
easy to just plug in an updated drive every time and not worry about
managing the stored files in your player. I know at least the iomega model
will work with your network if you are able to set it up and you can connect
to many files that way. For my purposes, though, I just replace the thumb
drive.

Sorry I couldn't be more help with that question! Maybe someone else more
tech-minded on the list will know for sure. :) Until then, I'll keep it in
mind for the next time I access the players, do a quick experiment, and see
what happens.

Thanks,
Kate

My niece is a lighting designer so I forwarded your question to her.
Below is Amy's response:

The LSI LumeLex 2040 series tracklight is the equivalent of a high-end
Mercedes.

Due to the remote phosphor design, worries of color shift of the light
source itself are minimized.

Manufacturer should provide a minimum of 5 year warranty on the product.

Be sure to understand when 70% of lumen output is reached to determine
when the light source module needs replaced.

If budget is not a concern, then this product is fine.

If budget is a concern, there are other LED products which do a great
job.

We are considering updating our gallery lighting, since our current
system dates from the 1960s. The University would like us to use
LumeLex 2040 series which uses LED lights. Has anyone had any
experiences using this system in exhibit galleries?

I would second working with local businesses, especially any that have a volunteer program where people give a few hours of time (often work time) to the community. We also have a large contingent of retired educators who work with the Museum on our education programs.

My other thought relates to the idea of making postings "interesting." Even though it is tempting to offer up opportunities that are wide ranging, I am finding that many of my most positive responses have been to fairly targeted volunteer opportunities, rather than very open ended advertisements. Perhaps more so than making a posting interesting, it is making several postings that would appeal to different personalities / interests.

All that being said, I think word of mouth is one of the most successful recruitment tools available. Perhaps have a "Bring a Friend" event that invites current volunteers to bring a friend they feel might be interested n helping out in some way.

I would second the approach for making the "job descriptions" as
specific as possible if you can identify projects with the skills that
people might have. For instance, we got a great response when we let it
be known that we wanted skilled people to sew repro period clothing,
than had a couple of sewing bees. People came to learn, and share their
skills with others and we now have a core group of ladies & one
gentleman who can sew just about anything we need.

Also when we had a particularly challenging hands-on activity that we
wanted, we posted "volunteer opportunities" on our web site for people
with mechanical or engineering background to help us work out what to
do. We got a retired machinist who I think is having fun applying his
skills in a new way. Ditto for carpentry projects, gardening, and
retired educators.

I don't know if these fall into the "usual" category, but we've seen
tremendous success from many websites such as http://www.allforgood.org/;
http://www.serve.gov/; and http://www.volunteermatch.org/. I would also
recommend using or connecting with groups through social media particularly
Twitter (@VolunteerMatch <http://twitter.com/volunteermatch>,
@ServeDotGov<http://twitter.com/servedotgov>,
@All_for_Good <http://twitter.com/all_for_good>). We've also contacted local
schools, charity organizations and churches to find eligible candidates.

Good luck.

We've had good luck hosting a volunteer "open house." It is publicized
through our web site, our member lists, in our newsletter and through
the media. We have one weekend day where we invite anyone who may be
possibly interested in being a volunteer to come and see what all that
means. Then we describe what some of their duties are, have different
staff members come by to say how important volunteers are and why, give
a brief tour, sometimes behind the scenes, offer light snacks, etc.
Basically we want them to know how valued volunteers are, what is
expected of them, and how they can help the organization.

I also agree with a "job description" of sorts, to specifically let
people know what being a volunteer means.
Good luck!

I know this question is probably one of the 6 questions that gets
recycled all the time, but I could use your (great) input regarding what
you have used as effective resources for getting volunteers. I am a
curator at a history museum where we staff the permanat gallery with
volunteers at the reception desk near the front door for 4 hour shifts,
each committ to once a week. Many love that time that they use for
themselves to read, write, do follow up study notes on "last night's
bible study" or their homework. Others like us to give them work to do
from the archives upstairs. Either way, it's an important job, though
not always the most exciting because anyone who walks in the door must
see this person first. Part concierge, part security, part museum gift
shop sales "employee," part basic "tour guide." We have used the usual
resources and I need some fresh ideas. Can you help?

Best,

Laurie

I just got through working with a young woman who was volunteering her time between semesters at high school as a graduation requirement. Because she was able to choose where she volunteered, she was enthusiastic about the work, and she did a terrific job on several projects we had her complete. So you might try contacting local high schools to see about similar requirements and to get yourself on their list of places they recommend for this sort of thing.

Hi,

Also, check out if there are any AmeriCorps programs in your area.
Generally an AmeriCorps member needs to do 1700 hours of volunteer work,
often it can be at a community space (museum!). The groups often have
themes, but the groups I've worked with have done everything from working
with conservation to childcare/student services and administrative positions
through VISTA programs.

Hope it helps.

Tara

Hi all,
I'm looking for recommendations on museums or aquariums with life sciences labs on site: anything from ecology
to zoology. My company is doing a research study on purchasing for life sciences labs, so unfortunately conservation labs don't count, and regular departments don't count unless there is an actual lab on site.
Any suggestions for me?
Much appreciated!
