As an old historic site on the high plains, we have a mouse problem in all

11 of complete historic structures. We have two mouser cats at our

administration building, which was the old Commissary. The cats have their

own budget for food, litter, veterinary care, etc. They hang out in the

daylight basement during the day and are allowed out at night. Office doors

are closed, as well as the doors to the main visitor center. We have night

guards on duty, and they do the feedings waterings and litter patrol. Both

cats were picked for their mousing abilities, and do a pretty good job.

They don't usually eat their kills and so someone has to clean up the final

death scene, but just having them seems to deter the mice. I am highly

allergic to cats (read anaphylaxis) but have never had trouble visiting

admin., the floors are tile and our janitors keep it quite clean. My office

is not in that building, so I do not have prolonged contact. The cats are

never in the Visitors Center area, and are not allowed in offices. they

patrol the halls, breakroom, bathroom and laundry. The cats are a

recognized part of our IPM plan.

I am doing some integrated pest management planning, and would like to

consider the pros and cons of “recruiting” a museum cat. I can’t seem to

find much in traditional sources, and I wonder if this is because museum

cats are frequently unofficial/unacknowledged/unauthorized.

If anyone can refer me to articles or other sources that discuss “museum

cats” I would appreciate them. Also, if you have your own stories,

opinions, or caveats, I’d appreciate those as well (on or off list).

Thanks,
