I like the Canon Powershot SX IS series (retails for $230-600). I have the SX1 IS at work, and an older model at home. It has an excellent optical (not digital) zoom and auto or manual controls. It works for probably 90%+ of my normal projects.

Additional or necessary lenses that go with or fit the Canon 5d mkII mentioned here might add significantly to the overall cost of a system, particularly if they are good lenses. As a consequence, the overall cost for such a system may not be in the museum's budget. It is important to do a specific job as well as possible, and this may not necessarily be done by a system that can do several things, particularly if the other functions are seen as casual or occasional uses for the camera. Or, a system may be able to handle several functions satisfactorily. However, the quality of the lenses is important, and may be the costly part, depending on the expectations for a system.
