StoryCorps to Visit IMLS's Medal-Winning Libraries and Museums

Washington, DC-Each year, select museums and libraries with outstanding
records of community service receive the Institute of Museum and Library
Services' (IMLS) National Medal for Museum and Library Service, the
nation's highest honor for museums and libraries. This year, for the
first time, personal stories demonstrating the ongoing impact of these
award-winning institutions will be documented through a cooperative
agreement between IMLS and StoryCorps, a national nonprofit organization
dedicated to recording, preserving, and sharing the stories of Americans
from all backgrounds and beliefs.

"Every year we hear from community members whose dreams have come true
because of the impact of a special library or museum. These institutions
help people find satisfying work, spark creative ideas, open new career
possibilities for young people, strengthen family and community ties,
and welcome new citizens. I look forward to working with StoryCorps to
enable more people to hear these important American stories," said
Marsha L. Semmel, acting director of IMLS.

"We are delighted to have this partnership with the Institute of Museum
and Library Services. We know that libraries and museums are places
where lives are changed and amazing stories are told every day," said
David Isay, Founder & President of StoryCorps.

Trained facilitators with StoryCorps' Door-to-Door Program will help
pairs of participants record a conversation about the medal-winning
museum or library. Interviewees will include staff, patrons, community
members, and others who have first-hand knowledge of the institution.
During each three-day visit, facilitators will record as many as 18
interviews, each of which lasts 40 minutes. At the end of each
interview, StoryCorps will give a CD copy of the interview to
participants and the host library or museum.

One interview from each recording event will be edited into a
StoryCorps-style segment provided to the host institution and posted on
the IMLS Web site. The complete collection of stories recorded will be
archived by the host institution and by the American Folklife Center at
the Library of Congress.

The 2009 National Medal winners and the dates of their StoryCorps visits
include:
1. Braille Institute Library Services, Los Angeles, CA June 8-10
2. Indianapolis Museum of Art, Indianapolis, IN June 23-25
3. Cincinnati Museum Center at Union Terminal, Cincinnati, OH July 14-16
