I agree with the other two postings: CCI and the Alaska
State Museum are the best places to start. The National
Park Service also has totem pole experience. Al Levitan
conserved the standing totem poles in Sitka's historic
park.

What has been done for totem poles stored inside is
different from totem poles displayed outside. Inside poles
may be injected with an acrylic consolidant and may be
drilled and doweled or have other additional supports added
to reduce danger to visitors. The Totem Heritage Center in
Ketchikan and the NPS Visitor's center in Sitka both had
potentially dangerous poles consolidated and supported so
they could be on display. Scott Carlee at the Alaska State
Museum should have access to all of that information.

The problem of your not accessioning the pole is another
issue. You should readdress this. What is the purpose of
the pole in the lobby? Is it an item that is in line with
the museum's mission? (Sounds like it might be) In which
case, it should probably be accessioned. If you have
questions about this, you might want to consult some
curatorial experts about how artifacts fit one's mission.
Again, Scott Carlee can help you.
