We also posted PDFs of the coloring book and an audio recording of the historical information in English and Spanish in our iTunes U store. The link for it can be found in my signature.

For our “Color the Ozarks” coloring book, here’s what we used:

Apple

Barn

Cabin

Doctor

Egg

Fireplace

Garden

Hog

Ice

Juice

Ka No Na (Cherokee for a grinder made from a hollow tree stump and a wooden club… in our exhibit hall)

Log

Music

Nail

Outhouse

Post office

Quilt

Railroad

Shiloh (the original settlement of current-day Springdale, Arkansas, and part of our museum name)

Tool

Uniform

Victory

Wagon

Oxen (yes, we cheated)

Yarn

Ozarks (a second cheat)

Since we have a large Latino/a population in our are, the alphabet words and the historical information included for teachers/parents to read were include both in English and in Spanish.

For X, we show a dresser-runner embroidered with cross-stitch, and let the kids see how you can make a design out of X’s.

For Z, very conveniently (and this is true) one of Solomon Caswell’s neighbors was named Zenus, so we use a “letter” that was written by Zenus to Solomon (we made it up). We read it out loud, and let the kids listen carefully for the Z-word.

Because the list was so generous with G’s <thank you!> my colleagues wonder what you could do with M? We use a wooden butter-Mold. We’ve already discussed C/churn with the kindergarteners and try to make that connection, but the Mold tends to fall flat. We think there might be a different and better “M” idea out there. (We already address Muskrats for F/fur.) Feel free to email Gill directly at [log in to unmask] , or me at [log in to unmask] . Please note that we have to use actual things that we can pull out of a trunk.

Happy Friday, everyone!

What do you use for "x"? And other letters, please.
