consider building a campus art collection from objects not accessioned by
the museum.

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] Question for university art museums

Hi All,

We have a situation potentially brewing and I hoped to get some feedback
from other university art museums who have dealt with similar pressures.

Years ago we were required to hang art from the collection in the university
president's home. We were finally able to stop that practice, with plenty of
arguments about proper care issues, insurance, etc., but now it looks like
the situation may arise again.

Do you have a similar situation? How have you handled the delicate dance of
keeping the administration happy with you (i.e. supportive in these tough
economic times when cuts are being made to "nonessential" university
elements) yet staying true to your mission as a museum and your
responsibilities to your collection?

Any advice is greatly appreciated,

Astrida
