Materiality and Intangibility: Contested Zones

A two-day international symposium for PhD students and early career researchers.

Join us at the new School of Museum Studies this December for the symposium Materiality and Intangibility: Contested Zones.

Museums are all about the material world; the display and preservation of works of art, their presentation and interpretation to audiences. Yet, it can be argued that it is the 'intangible' elements of objects, museums and their audiences which create meanings from the material world. Between the 'material' and the 'intangible' often a controversial, defined division is perceived. Materiality and Intangibility: Contested Zones intends to challenge this fixed division and explore a more fluid conceptual space, where the ‘material’ and the ‘intangible’ interweave. 

We have devised an exciting programme of presentations and workshops, keynote speakers and artistic interventions, which engage with materiality and intangibility in inspiring and innovative ways.

Confirmed keynote speakers: Dr Sandra Dudley, University of Leicester and Dr Kostas Arvanitis, University of Manchester.

The events will be hosted by the research student community based at the School of Museum Studies at the University of Leicester, a leading internationally renowned centre for Museum Studies and teaching since 1966. The School was recently assessed as having the highest proportion of world-leading research in any subject in any UK university (RAE 2008).

Booking fee: £20 (includes lunch and refreshments and refreshments on both days).
