You should talk with a lady named Sarah (sorry, I don’t know her last name) at the St Paul Science Museum. They have a very elaborate setup up of “check out” materials available to teachers there, but they’ve developed a well thought-out system that works for them.

At the museum I currently work at, Minnetrista, we used to have totes of thematic materials (complete with lesson plans) that schools could pick up from us for free and keep for up to two weeks to use in their classroom. They basically signed a form that said they’d use the materials responsible and that was it. We got rid of these kits about 2 years ago because teachers weren’t using them. We had maybe two teachers every school year use them, which wasn’t enough to warrant the energy of maintaining them, storing them, and keeping the materials up-to-date.

I hope this information proves useful to you.

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] Discovery Trunks

I have been charged with starting a new discovery trunk program. It like I
can go one of a few ways: docents take trunks into classroom; museum checks
out trunks to schoool districts; museum mails trunks to schools upon
request.

Could anyone elaborate on the pitfalls of any of these options? To include
everything in the trunks to make them exceptional: repros; educational
supplements; teacher packets; drives up the cost even more. It seems like
mailing the trunks and docent travel would be the most costly, but perhaps
more effective.

Any tips on keeping costs of production low, and standards high?
