I'd be a bit insulted if someone laid me off but said I could
volunteer. Now you know your people better but I'd be like "Why should
I do my job for free?" If the two ladies who were working were mainly
doing so for fun and not for income, they might not mind just being
volunteers. But if they depended on that income, saying that they
could volunteer is a bit insulting. If they offer to volunteer, that
is a different story.

Also, if you are a county or state museum, there might be rules
against former employees volunteering. I'd also check with the
county/city government as to what their lay-off proceedures are just
to make sure you have got all the paperwork straight.

If you can include some sort of severance, 2 weeks pay for example,
that also is usually appreciated. Again, check the regs before you do
so.
