Remember, and I apologize if this is obvious, PastPerfect uses Chenall's
Nomenclature which is based on an item's *function*. So it sounds to me,
and I'm not in an art museum so I may be missing the boat, that it is a
slightly different way of looking at the item. So a painting 'functions' as
'communication artifact' since it's communicating an idea, concept, etc.

Hope this helps.

Shelly

Hello:

At our institution, we catalog art works in the Objects database. If you
look at that database, you will see that there's a tab for cataloging art
works. When you're in that part of PastPerfect, you can click on "thesaurus"
in the object names field, then on "Communication Artifact" and then on
"Art", you should then get a list of useful object names which you can then
amend to your particular needs.

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] Very Basic PastPerfect Question for Art Museums

Hello ,

We recently purchased PastPerfect, and we're under the gun to digitize our
records for reaccreditation and a grant deadline. None of us have experience
with databases, or familiarity yet with the program. I don't want to get off
on the wrong foot.

A past employee began a few records, and used "Communication Artifact" under
category, "painting" (for example) under object name, and "art" under
sub-category. Is this standard? It seems awkward. I'd appreciate any
guidelines on how to use these fields properly and how others have possibly
altered fields. I'm worried about entering data in the wrong fields, and
needing to go back and redo it all.

I know this is a short-cut asking for help, but I'm somewhat desperate.
Thanks in advance for any feedback.

With kind regards,

Kim Hoffmann
