Protective Enclosures for Collections
Where: Tennessee State Library & Archives. Nashville, TN
When: November 19th -20th, 9am to 5pm
This two-day class teaches students how to fabricate simple protective
enclosures from quality materials for all types of collections. No prior
experience is presumed, and the class will focus on techniques that do
not require expensive equipment and supplies.
The following procedures are taught in small groups through
demonstrations and practice:
+ Basic stabilization and measuring to achieve proper enclosure fit
+ Building a custom portfolio for pamphlet binding, pockets, or flap
enclosures
+ Constructing a wrapper
+ Creating a corrugated clamshell box
+ Other photo/manuscript/single leaf enclosures
+ Encapsulating with polyester film and PAT tested double-sided tape.
Lectures and discussion address preservation principles,
decision-making, and organizing and equipping a work area. Included with
the registration fee is a tool kit students may take back to their
institutions.
