Christian -- what's the problem with plantation? It is what it is...do they
think it's evocative of slavery? I have to say that we have early 18th
century farms here in PA that were called "plantations."

Dear friends,
I am certain that someone on the museum list can help me find just the
right word needed for the title of a writing project focused on a
historic house here at Sweet Briar College.
This project will focus on the three primary phases of the house's
architectural history: its original form as a Palladian house built in
the late 18th century (white columns, double portico), its renovation
as an Italianate villa in the mid-19th century, and its reincarnation
as a monument to the Aesthetic Movement, complete with roaming
peacocks and bamboo forests in the late 19th century.
The working title is: "Sweet Briar House, 1800-1900: Palladian
Plantation, Italianate Villa, Aesthetic Retreat."
The editors are quibbling with the word "Plantation," since while
Sweet Briar certainly was a working plantation during this time
period, the plantation proper is not the focus, only the house
itself--and "Plantation House" won't work since it repeats the house's
name. They like leading off with the alliteration although it's not
strictly necessary--and somehow "Palladian Pad" and "Palladian
Palace," which are all I'm coming up with, probably won't work!
So, I am hoping that some of the inveterate wordsmiths out there can
help me find a word to substitute for plantation house that will
convey the appropriate meaing and work nicely with the rest of the
title!
