Dear friends,

When in doubt, always consult the museum listserve!

The title the committee likes best is:

Sweet Briar, 1800-1900: Palladian Plantation House, Italianate Villa,
Aesthetic Retreat

If anyone's interested in playing this game further, I am also trying
to come up with a title for an upcoming paper focused on the Aesthetic
Movement phase of the house, which will cover the family's trip to the
Centennial Exhibition of 1876, and their purchases of many types of
Japanese goods there. They came down with such a case of
"Japanamania" that they even planted bamboo forests on the property,
and bought peacocks to lend an aesthetic air to the grounds.

So far I have, "Roaming Peacocks and Bamboo Forests: The Aesthetic
Retreat of the Williams Family, Sweet Briar, Virginia." Any thoughts?
As you can tell, I am hopeless at coming up with clever and catchy
titles!

All best,
--
