For the even more archaic amongst us there are also 3" and 8" floppy
disks. 3" disks were most used by Amstrad PCWs and 8" disks were a very
early form of floppy disk.

Subject: Re: 3.25" floppies

I am not an expert on this subject, but will offer my insights. I
believe
that you mean 3.5" floppies? If not, please ignore my comments, as I
have
no experience with 3.25" floppies (there is, of course, a 5.25" floppy).
These floppies are on a magnetic media that will degrade as all magnetic
media do, and are not archival. Generally, they can remain readable for
a
number of years. I have some 10-15 years old that are fine, but reader
obsolescence is an issue with ALL types of media. Their data should be
transferred to a more stable media, such as archival CDs. I've had no
trouble reading and copying them when I have tried. You may want to
check
with the Image Permanence Institute at RIT, or with others who have been
doing research on this subject. Good luck!
