Some type of museum store or mini-store is a must in
today's fiscal realities, if you need to continue
generating revenue. This is true whether it is
operated by a Friends group or by the museum itself.

If a museum store needs to be scaled-back to meet
current visitor demand, so be it. For decades,
Pittsburgh's original Buhl Planetarium had a small
gift counter, before it was expanded into a
full-fledged gift shop.

Maybe your museum mini-store is only staffed on
weekends, or other times of high demand. This is how
it works with the gift shop of Pittsburgh's Duquesne
Incline.

To continue to meet the missison of your museum, you
will need revenue. A museum gift shop or mini-gift
shop must be one part of that mix in bringing in such
revenue.
