Hi, Jan --
If you go to www.imdb.com, select keyword from the
pull-down menu and enter museums in the search field
you will get all sorts of movies that have been given
the plot keyword museum or museums. You can then use
the links to the reviews to see what is said about the
film and museums as a source other than the film
itself. Some of the films are fairly important and
will be the subject of books and scholarly articles.
Topkapi and the 1999 remake of The Thomas Crowne
Affair both feature spectacular heists from museums.
One of my favorites is The Train starring Burt
Lancaster, an amazing piece of cinematic
story-telling.
Over the years there have been articles written about
individual museum's experiences with film companies --
you may have to go to a library and consult printed
indexes to track down citations, then use ILL to
obtain copies as these may not be online.
Have you checked the archives of Museum-L (I'm pretty
certain this has been a topic of discussion in the
past)? If you click on the link the listserv provides
at the end of this message, you'll get directions on
how to access the archives.
Representation in books and films is a perennial
favorite discussion topic on Archives and Archivist
(A&A) List and also on various library listservs.
There's at least one web site devoted to the topic of
archives and libraries in films and fiction.
