Kim -- you could recuse yourself from voting on
matters that might be construed as a conflict of
interest. Abstaining from a vote occasionally is a
time-honored tradition.

Boards benefit from members coming from similar
organizations (i.e., collections-oriented, cultural
heritage, mission with a strong education focus).

There might be a problem if you were asked to serve on
a board where members are expected to make
significant personal or corporate financial
contributions to the organization, for example, many
museum boards; public library boards rarely involve
this sort of contribution.) Of course, if you're
philanthropically minded and have money to spare,
chances are you would prefer to donate to your own
organization.

As a rule, though, improved coordination and
cooperation between the historical society and the
library can only benefit the entire community and as a
library board member, you'd be in a great position to
help.
