In addition to the good advice by Dave Harvey, you might try investigating 
whether either Joseph Vincelli or Wayne Wood are still at the McGill 
University Environmental Safety Office.  They gave a very good talk at the 
SPNHC 2002 meeting on Contaminated Collections about their work with 
radioactive mineral materials in the McGill Redpath Museum.  They might have 
useful information for you as well.
