Another approach to this question is to start by asking what employers
want in a public history MA graduate. A few years ago I conducted a
survey on this question for the American Historical association (in the
context of a larger study of masters-level training for historians). The
results are available online at
http://www.historians.org/projects/cmd/2005/Report/intro.cfm (check out
the final section of chapter 3).
