Duties: As Museum Specialist (Technology), you will serve as Assistant
Collections Manager of historical collections handling a diverse
collection of over 200,000 medical instruments and equipment, documents,
models, pharmaceuticals, uniforms and ephemera, collected and maintained
by the museum in the fields of the history of medicine. You will handle
artifacts for use by non-museum staff and supervise handling of
artifacts by non-collections staff. You will maintain historical
collection records, and catalog historical collection objects onto a
computerized database. You will identify and research artifacts to
determine historical use and provenance.
You will select and assist in the selection and preparation of
historical artifacts for exhibits and publications. 

About the Position: This position is located at the Armed Forces
Institute of Pathology, on the grounds of Walter Reed Army Medical
Center, 6900 Georgia Avenue NW, Washington, DC, near the Silver Spring,
MD border. The work is supervised by the Historical Collections Manager
and the work Work requires sitting, use of a computer, walking,
reaching, bending, and use of hands as well as lifting objects up to 40
pounds in weight. Work is generally performed in research, storage,
exhibit and in laboratory areas.
Work involves occasional use of power tools and warehouse moving
equipment.
Incumbent is required to observe normal safety precautions when using
equipment.

*	Specialized experience is defined as experience that equipped
the candidate with the knowledge, skills and abilities related to the
operation or management of a museum or similar collection of valuable
objects. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include
collections management, registration, cataloging, research,
preservation, restoration, or conservation of collections of museum
material, or other experience related to the position to be filled. For
this position, experience should include the knowledge, skills and
abilities to acquire and preserve artifacts that document the history of
the practice of medicine and the evolution of medical technology. 


*	GS-09: One year of experience directly related to the occupation
equivalent to at least the next lower grade level; or Master's or
equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level
graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if
related; or equivalent combinations of experience and education.
