Sounds like you should join the 18th C studies listserve  and post 
your query to its  members. (I'd recommend digest format.)

It would help to specify the religion/ethnic background/town of the 
families involved--I'd assume rich Quakers and rich Anglicans would 
have had different ways of approaching this, ditto Germans vs. 
English.
