Folks:

As summer gets underway so too will new projects at the MUA. The East Carolina University Summer Field School has wrapped up and the students and faculty have made their final entries to their online journal. But as that project goes into the history books we present a new submission on Japanese Wooden Boats. In this latest entry entitled “History” Michelle Damian talks about “…writing the historical background necessary to place the scenes depicted in the woodblock prints into context. The major challenge here was to compress approximately two hundred years of Japanese history into fifteen pages or so.” Michelle discusses the different types of boats used on the rivers near Edo such as shallow draft cargo boats, and even yubune, “bath boats” used as floating washroom vessels. You can reach the entry by selected “History” from the menu on this page: http://www.uri.edu/artsci/his/mua/project_journals/aj/aj_intro.shtml

We hope you enjoy this latest posting on the MUA.

I would also like to take this opportunity to publicly thank Dr. Larry Babits, Dr. David Stewart, and the crew and students at ECU for providing such excellent journal entries and for sharing their experiences in underwater archaeology with the public.
