Courtney,

For my two cents...

Normally our loans are governed by somewhat standard insurance language.
All loans are covered by our wall-to-wall policy, which is the limit of a
claimant's ability to recover any loss.

I have never worked a case where someone was claiming a loss in overall
value. I would think such a claim would be very difficult to substantiate
without pre and post damage appraisals, and a clear idea of the cause. It
is also not part of our loan language.

We would normally pay for conservation costs to repair damaged work, within
the normal exclusions of our policy. I do not think there would ever be a
reason to pay for both. Or I should say I do not think our insurance would
even consider paying for both.

I would say make sure you ask your insurance rep that question too.

Good luck.

We are in the process of updating our incoming loan forms and I was
wondering what other museums include regarding damage to an artifact. If
an
artifact is damaged does the museum pay for conservation costs or
compensate the lender for the loss in value? Or both? Any suggestions you
could give would be most helpful.
