Hi,
My understanding of how it works is that any statute of limitations would
apply to prosecuting the thief.  The objects would still be returned to
you.  This would be unfortunate for anyone who paid money for the object
the last time it changed hands since you would not have to buy it back.  I
also think you would have to have some way as identifying it as the object
that was stolen from your museum.  There were a couple of items stole from
the museum where I work many years ago and we do have a way of identifying
them if they are ever found.
