Mary,
I realize your concern is for the security of the aforementioned female
staffers, and is admirable. I do not think there is anything specific
beyond the normally recommended security procedures, personal or
professional, that would help prevent the phenomenon or protect the
staffers. I am however totally capable of affirming the generality of your
observation(s).
As to the cause, please forgive my brashness, but I suspect the cause of
this phenomenon is the same as whatever forces women to go to the bathroom
in pairs, even if they do not both need to "go", where men typically prefer
to go it alone. I do not in any way pretend to know what that reason is,
only to speculate that there is a logical connection. Some sort of
interesting societal foible, or social norm that generates a noticeable
pattern.
I too would be fascinated to see any scientific analysis on the subject. I
would also throw in another observation, that in larger groups of 3 or more
the trend seems to normally be in favor of a female majority. Essentially
always more women in a group than men.
Have a great holiday.

Dear List Members:
I'm curious about your experiences.. At all the museums I've worked at
(all in New Jersey) I can only think of one instance where a solitary
woman came for a 'walk-in' or unreserved tour. Women come in pairs or
groups, but hardly ever alone. Men, however, come in regularly by
themselves, which can pose an interesting problem as a great deal of
museum staffers are women. I can pose some possible reasons for this,
but I was wondering if all of you have had the same experiences or
whether a study has been done about single male v. single female
visitation.
Just curious!
Mary Rizzo
