Thanks for your good observation about the Shakers and the
construction of their houses.  I'll pass it on to Kandie, who, I am
sure, was not thinking of the Shakers when she wrote her reply.  Her
work is very much focused on the mid to late 19th century (see her
website, http://www.kandiecarle.com/) and Victorian-era costume and
dress, which is, what I feel confident, why she replied as she did.
She will be the first to say "Oops--forgot that the Shakers *did* have
two separate staircases," although not of the type described in the
original posting!
