Andrew W. Mellon Curator of Books
The Folger Shakespeare Library, Washington, DC, seeks a Curator of
Books. M.A. required; M.L.S./Ph.D. strongly preferred. Five-to-eight
years' scholarly/professional experience with collections pertaining to
the early modern period. Experience in a scholarly environment
essential, with demonstrated accomplishments that involve some
combination of bibliography, bibliographic control, teaching,
exhibitions, technology or reference services. A record of publication
or other relevant professional activity will be useful to demonstrate
scholarly interests. Subject expertise in literature or history in the
early modern period. Scholarly understanding of bibliography and the
history of the book. Proficiency in caring for rare and fragile primary
research material, based on a thorough understanding of best practices.
Experience collaborating with book and paper conservators. Working
knowledge of Latin and at least one foreign language (French, German, or
Italian preferred). Excellent writing, communication, and interpersonal
skills required as applicable to teaching, scholarship, reference
services and scholarly support. Proficient computer skills in word
processing, database management, Internet access, and the uses of
technology in a research environment. Knowledge of basic cataloging
principles; familiarity with MARC 21 and DCRB/DCRM(B). Ability to work
independently and in association with peers and colleagues within and
beyond the institution. Ability to handle multiple priorities with
patience and accuracy.
Primary responsibility for a world-class collection of early printed
books, with holdings that encompass five-hundred years of printing
history. Principal liaison with the Conservation Department for
establishing priorities of treatment for rare and modern books and, with
the Head of Reader Services, on questions of circulation and access.
Member of a curatorial team whose attention to the care and use of the
collection is a core responsibility, with an emphasis on providing
intellectual and physical access to (primarily) printed material, while
educating staff and users in proper handling, to instill a sense of
shared responsibility for the collection. Reference service and
scholarly support are essential activities, drawing on printed and
digital resources, collegial and electronic networks.
Develops and recommends policies for the printed book collection,
including access, handling, restricted use, loans, and collection
maintenance. In consultation with the Head of Conservation and the Head
of Reader Services, selects, approves, and prioritizes printed materials
from the book collection for conservation treatment. Creates records in
the Conservation Database for all items examined and assigns a priority
for treatment. In consultation with the Assistant Head of Conservation
chooses items for immediate treatment and for treatment throughout the
year. As time permits, surveys heavily used or sensitive parts of the
collection to plan for rehousing and to develop long-range conservation
plans. Consults frequently with the Head of Reader Services and other
members of the Reading Room staff on the handling and circulation of
restricted or fragile items. Supports the Head of Reference in providing
reference service and scholarly support as needed, for readers and the
Folger Institute. Confers with Conservation, Reference, and staff in the
Department of Photography and Digital Imaging in matters related to
display, presentation, and permissions to photograph or publish items in
the printed book collection.
Assists the Head of Acquisitions in the almost daily review of
bookseller and auction catalogues for the purpose of recommending items
for acquisition. Participates in setting policies for collection
development. Supports the Head of Cataloging in matters of bibliographic
control for both modern and rare printed materials. Confers on matters
related to condition and description of collection materials.
Participates in tours, presentations, and provides orientations to the
collection as needed. Participates in acquisitions and collection
development, stewardship and cultivation, policy making as related to
collections, and planning grant-funded initiatives. 35 hours per week,
8:45 am - 4:45 pm, Monday-Friday. Additional hours as needed. Salary in
high 60's.
