Our institution is pursing land and construction for a new storage
facility in the near future. One of the driving forces and selling
points behind the project is that the building will be a "green
building".
The initial Feasibility Study highlighted most of the storage
underground, in a hillside, and/or with a sedum rooftop.

For collection preservation this raises a few red flags. There is data
out there to support 'why not to do it this way' - including data from
FEMA, who have stated any cultural institution storing materials
underground basically does not have a Disaster Plan.

However, there is also data out there supporting such under-ground
transitions for new cultural institution construction projects.

As a result I am trying to pull together as much supporting data for
either argument to help our institution make the right choice.

Your help is appreciated. Please feel free to respond off-list at my
e-mail address below.
