The Philadelphia Museum of Art's Center for American Art is hosting the
symposium Museums and Houses: Rethinking the Uses and Stories of Historic
Sites.
Friday, November 3, 6:00pm-7:00pm, and Saturday, November 4, 2006, 9:30am -
4:30pm.
Historic house museums dot the American landscape, each with a particular
institutional history that shaped its transition from a house to a museum.
Such history impacts the way the house museum has been used, the way it
looks, and ultimately the way the museum visitor experiences the house's
architecture and its story. Mount Pleasant, operated by the Philadelphia
Museum of Art for 80 years, has recently undergone a roof restoration that
has facilitated a re-evaluation of the interpretation of this 18th century
architectural masterpiece. Using Mount Pleasant as a starting point, this
symposium will explore different interpretive schemes by looking at other
historic American house museums that have been refreshed or reinvented for
the 21st century.
Registration fees include admission to all lectures, the Museum galleries,
and a box lunch.
Nonmembers $40
Philadelphia Museum of Art members $30
Students $20
