IMLS Calls for Museum Grants for African American History and Culture
Applications
New Application Deadline: January 15, 2007
Washington, DC--The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS)
announces the availability of grant program guidelines for the second
year of the Museum Grants for African American History and Culture
program. This program provides opportunities for African American
museums to strengthen the knowledge and abilities of current staff and
attract other professionals and new staff to African American museum
practice. Museum Grants for African American History and Culture are
intended to build expertise and improve skills in management,
operations, programming, collections care, and other areas. Funds will
also support a broad range of other activities including training,
technical assistance, internships, outside expertise, or other
professional development tools.
"I am pleased to present the second cycle of this funding opportunity
for African American museums," said Dr. Anne-Imelda M. Radice, Director
of IMLS. "I invite all eligible museums to consider applying for
funding. We were delighted by the enthusiastic response in the inaugural
year of this exciting new opportunity and look forward to a robust
response in the second funding cycle."
The application and guidelines are now available on the IMLS Web site
at: www.imls.gov/applicants/grants/AfricanAmerican.shtm. FY 2007 is also
the first year that applicants can submit their applications online
through Grants.gov. Instructions are available at
www.imls.gov/applicants/grantsgov/aahc07.shtm. The application deadline
is January 15, 2007, which falls on a federal holiday, so applications
may be postmarked up until January 16, and Grants.gov will accept
applications until 11:59 PM EST on January 16.
To help applicants prepare proposals for this grant program, IMLS will
offer a telephone conference call on Thursday, December 14, 2006 from
3:00 to 4:00 PM EST. Please check back at
www.imls.gov/applicants/grants/AfricanAmerican.shtm for details on how
to call in.
This historic program was established by the National Museum of African
American History and Culture Act, which calls upon the Director of the
Institute to create a new funding opportunity in consultation with the
Director and Council of the National Museum for African American History
and Culture. Congress appropriated $842,000 to IMLS for the Museums
Grants for African American History and Culture in FY2006. President
Bush has requested $1,500,000 for the program for FY2007.
African American museums continue to be eligible for other IMLS grant
programs and the agency encourages applications. Visit
