Hi Laurel,

See if you can arrange accreditation points for continued learning credits by offering teacher workshops or open houses. I have conducted many, all with great turn out, due to the continued learning credits we offer. I try to limit the workshops to twenty or thirty as a cut off. Try contacting the school board to find out what your museum would need to offer for each point. At my museum, we conduct either full day (6hr) or half day (3hr) workshops where the teachers experience our educational offerings first hand, and are also exposed to new knowledge or new ways of incorporating the museum's curriculum into the classroom. I usually have a theme, something that catches the teacher's interest, so they will choose to attend my programs instead of other museums. In Virginia, we can offer 1 point per hour, and the teachers are required to accumulate 15 per year. This is arranged and approved by the district head of social studies in 2 cities.

After you can safely say that teachers will receive credit for signing up, then use mass mail flyers, or fax to community schools. Always feed the teachers something, and make them packets of info to take back to their classroom. See if you can arrange to have parking validated at a local garage, although you may just have to make the teachers pay to park.

Good Luck!

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] Teacher open houses

Hello everyone,

My museum is considering teacher open houses as a way to promote our new educational offerings. Any advice on the subject? Have people had good turnouts and good results from open houses? For reference, our museum is located in Center City, Philadelphia, and is very accessible via public transit, though parking can be a problem. We are a fairly small museum with around 60,000 visitors a year.

Thank you,

Laurel
