Is there a way to receive the Museum-L in digest form without the
extraneous text such as: "<p class=3DMsoNormal><font size=3D2
face=3DArial><span =
style=3D'font-size:10.0pt;
font-family:Arial'>Union Station/Kansas City =
Museum</span></font><o:p></o:p></p>"
Sorry if this is common knowledge. I couldn't find it through Help or
FAQ's. My IT person has not been of any assistance, either.
Thanks,
tcb

Subject: New Masters Programs in Image Science
.. Please excuse cross posting ..
=> Key Competence for the Art and Media Sector
New and expanded course offer at the Center for Image Science
Parallel to employment!
=> Postgraduate Program MEDIA ART HISTORIES, MA
=> Postgraduate Program IMAGE and SCIENCE
=> Postgraduate Program IMAGE MANAGEMENT, MA
=> Postgraduate Program PHOTOGRAPHY / IMAGE SCIENCE, MA
=> Postgraduate Program ICONOGRAPHY / IMAGE SCIENCE, MA
Danube University Krems is the first public university
in Europe which specializes in advanced continuing education
offering low-residency degree programs for working professionals
and lifelong learners. The Center for Image Science, where
many MediaArtHistories courses take place, is housed in a
14th century Monastary, remodeled to fit the needs of modern
research in singular surroundings.
With its new modular courses starting in November 2006
the Center for Image Science (CIS) at Danube University offers
an educational program unique in Europe.
Without interrupting their career students have the opportunity to
learn
through direct, hands-on experience, social learning in small groups
and contacts with commerce and industry. They gain key
qualifications for the contemporary art and media marketplace.
International experts analyze the image worlds of art, science,
politics and economy and elucidate how they originated, became
established and how they have stood the test of time.
The innovative approach at CIS is reinforced by praxis-oriented study,
for example, of new types of image and video databases
and the application of advanced processes for converting
image collections into digital form. The post-graduate MA
courses offer instruction in a finely tuned mix of practical skills,
theoretical knowledge and close cooperation with top
researchers and professionals from the international
image science community.
=> First international Master in MEDIA.ART.HISTORIES (English
language)
The postgraduate program MediaArtHistories conveys the
most important developments of contemporary art
through a network of renowned international theorists,
artists and curators like Steve Dietz, Erkki Huhtamo,
Lev Manovich, Christiane Paul, Paul Sermon, Oliver Grau
and many others. Using online databases and other
modern aids, knowledge of computer animation, net art,
interactive, telematic and genetic art as well as the most
recent reflections on nano art, CAVE installations, augmented
reality and wearables are introduced. Historical derivations
that go far back into art and media history are tied in
intriguing ways to digital art. Important approaches
and methods from Image Science, Media Archaeology
and the History of Science & Technology will be discussed.
Media Art History offers a basis for understanding evolutionary
history of audiovisual media, from the Laterna Magica to
the Panorama, Phantasmagoria, Film, and the Virtual Art
of recent decades.

Have you ever asked yourself: "How do I get on the Cover of
Nature?"
The program Image & Science conveys in-depth knowledge
of the history, aesthetics and practice of scientific visualization.
Based on historically established image competency it
demonstrates the latest possibilities of exemplifying scientific
data and results in a visual form and helps professionals in the
field to achieve quick results and improve their way of presenting
their work. Various forms of visual information are being included
- from statistical analysis and diagrams, plans and technical
drawings to visualizations in natural sciences like in Medicine or
Nanotechnology or displays of fluidity. The close cooperation of
natural scientists, IT-professionals, historians, artists and
designers contribute to the interlacing of the complementary
perspectives of natural sciences and the cultural and historical
approach.

Subject: Smithsonian Inspector General Resigns
The news stories about the Smithsonian for-profit subsidiary are
interesting, but there is an issue of broader interest here about the
proper and effective museum oversight. Looking at the actual report of
the
internal auditor turns up some interesting management issues.
Smithsonian Inspector General Resigns
But a museum internal auditor needs a lower profile and a more focused
mission to maintain effectiveness.

Hello Ellen-
We have a historic costume and textiles collection
here at Ohio State that may be a possibility. The
website is:
http://costume.osu.edu/Exhibitions/TextileTreasures/textiletreasures.htm
Also, the curator is Gayle Strege and her contact
information is [log in to unmask] She is very helpful
and if she doesn't feel that the OSU collection is a
good place, I'm sure she could point you in the right
direction. Best of luck!

Subject: Renamed: filtering museum-l messages
=20
Rhonda,
I send all of my messages from museum-l into a folder like you are
trying to do. I filter by "sent to" rather than "from." This works, at
least in Microsoft Outlook, because all of the messages are being sent
to Museum-L rather than personally to me.
Don't know whether you've thought about trying it that way, but maybe
this will solve your problem. If not, does museum-l still have a digest
option? It's been so long since I've taken my messages that way, that
I'm not sure whether it's still available, but that would allow you to
get all the e-mails lumped into one or two long e-mails a day instead.
Katherine

Subject: Re: Position Opening at The Metropolitan Museum of Art
Please, please have pity and kindly help me find a way to filter my
messages through the options in Hotmail. This is my regular account,
and the only one I am able to access long-distance. I deeply appreciate
receiving the messages, but to have them dropping into my In-box is
causing problems with time and mail management. Meaning that urgent
messages are getting lost in the thick of the others. I have tried to
filter and direct all museum-L messages into a folder automatically, but
because the addresses of the senders vary, it has not worked so far ....
(heavy sigh)
Help!

Good afternoon,
=20
Do any of your institutions have an official style manual that is used,
such as Chicago Manual, Kate Turabian, Ohio State, etc.? (I am
specifically interested in Bibliographical citations.)
=20
If so, which one?
=20
Also, is this a departmental policy or an organization-wide one? Are
there any cases where perhaps research/collections may be using one and
PR or someone else using another?
=20
Thank you, I am rather curious to hear.

I am also interested in this topic. Do any museums have a style sheet
(in addition to or instead of a preferred style manual)? If you do,
would you be willing to share it (on or off-list)? Thanks!

We use an instution-wide style guide based on the Chicago Manual of
Style. However, upon looking at what was handed out to staff, this
guide does not include information on bibliographical citations.

Subject: style manuals
Good afternoon,
Do any of your institutions have an official style manual that is used,
such as Chicago Manual, Kate Turabian, Ohio State, etc.? (I am
specifically interested in Bibliographical citations.)
If so, which one?
Also, is this a departmental policy or an organization-wide one? Are
there any cases where perhaps research/collections may be using one and
PR or someone else using another?
Thank you, I am rather curious to hear.

Subject: Descriptive cataloguing (metadata) standards
This is a multi-part message in MIME format.

Content-Type: text/plain;

A group of us in North Carolina are working on developing standards for
descriptive cataloguing for cultural objects. We are using the
Cataloguing Cultural Objects Draft that the Visual Resources Association
has developed as a jumping-off point, keeping in mind other types of
cataloguing standards like MARC and ACR2, but we'd like for this
metadata standard to be something relatively simple and
straightforward--rather than the Oxford English Dictionary for metadata,
we'd like something very readable, that people would actually use.
=20
As we were working on this last week, it dawned on us that perhaps
someone else out there was doing something similar and might like to
share, so before we reinvent the wheel entirely . . . anyone out there?
=20
One of my colleagues will likely post a similar question to the RCAAM
listserve, so if you see it twice, you don't have to respond to both of
us.
=20
Thanks!
Katherine

Katherine,
Are you discussing a "content standard" ala CCO or AACR2, or are you
attempting to draft a metadata schema (a data dictionary of elements,
such
as MARC, MODS, Dublin Core, VRACore, CDWALite etc.).
There are all sorts of other questions between the lines of what you're
asking, but there are certainly many existing efforts that may fit your
needs. In any event, given the opportunities for sharing via network
infrastructures, it would be a worthwhile to be aware of other related
activities.
I didn't want to go into a long post here, but would be happy to discuss
the
issues off-list.

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] Descriptive cataloguing (metadata) standards
A group of us in North Carolina are working on developing standards for
descriptive cataloguing for cultural objects. We are using the
Cataloguing
Cultural Objects Draft that the Visual Resources Association has
developed
as a jumping-off point, keeping in mind other types of cataloguing
standards
like MARC and ACR2, but we'd like for this metadata standard to be
something
relatively simple and straightforward--rather than the Oxford English
Dictionary for metadata, we'd like something very readable, that people
would actually use.
As we were working on this last week, it dawned on us that perhaps
someone
else out there was doing something similar and might like to share, so
before we reinvent the wheel entirely . . . anyone out there?
One of my colleagues will likely post a similar question to the RCAAM
listserve, so if you see it twice, you don't have to respond to both of
us.
Thanks!
Katherine

Conflict of Interest. A conflict of interest is deemed to exist when an
interested person has actual or potential personal gain or
the
appearance of personal gain at the expense of the corporation. Personal
gain or the appearance of personal gain does not necessarily preclude
work
for hire, contracts for services, or other business transactions
provided
proper procedures are followed. Further, a conflict of interest exists
if
an interested person takes advantage of information available to him
or
her concerning the acquisition or deaccession of collections' objects
for
his or her own personal collecting activities;
an interested person competes for personal gain in the purchase of any
object that is being considered or is likely to be considered for the
museum's collections;
an interested person purchases or otherwise acquires objects from the
collections through the act of deaccessioning or any other means;
an interested person sells, trades, or otherwise make commitments of
museum collection items or uses his or her affiliation with the
corporation
to further his or her own personal collections; or,
an interested person accepts any significant gifts or favors from any
organization that has business dealings with the corporation.
Interested Person. Any director, officer, member of a standing
committee or
task force or paid and unpaid staff who has a direct or indirect
financial
interest in a transaction or arrangement is an "interested person" with
respect to that transaction or arrangement.
Financial Interest. A person has a "financial interest" in a
transaction or
arrangement if the person has, directly or indirectly, through business,
investment or family: (i) an ownership or investment interest in any
entity
with which the corporation has a transaction or arrangement, (ii) a
compensation arrangement with the corporation or with any entity or
individual with which the corporation has a transaction or arrangement,
or
(iii) a potential ownership or investment interest in, or compensation
arrangement with, any entity or individual with which the corporation is
negotiating a transaction or arrangement. Compensation includes direct
and
indirect remuneration as well as gifts or favors that are substantial in
nature.
Family Member. A person's "family" is limited to such person's: (i)
spouse,
(ii) brothers or sisters by whole or half blood, (iii) spouses of
brothers
or sisters by whole or half blood, (iv) parents, grandparents and great
grandparents (v) children, including those legally adopted, (vi)
grandchildren, (vii) great grandchildren and (viii) spouses of children,
grandchildren and great grandchildren.

How many of you include volunteers and board members in your collections
policy/personnel policy as it relates to personal collecting codes of
conduct? In your opinion, should the personal collecting habits of
board
members differ from those of the museum staff?

Subject: Re: Renamed: filtering museum-l messages
There are a couple of ways to handle this issue.
One would be to get your mail in digest form, so you would get one email
with all the museum-l messages for that day.
Another option, the one I use, is to set up your subscription to
museum-l
so that the list name shows up in the subject line of each message
coming
from museum-l. I then wrote an email sorting rule so that anything with
museum-l in the subject line is automatically sent to a separate folder
and
does not clutter up my inbox.
You should be able to manage your list subscription online. Go to
http://home.ease.lsoft.com/archives/museum-l.html and then click on
"Join
or leave the list (or change settings)".
If you want to change your settings so that the list name shows up in
the
subject line of each email, that is called "LISTSERV-style, with list
name
in subject".
If you want, you can also just send an email message to
[log in to unmask] and in the body of the message put *only*
the line:
set museum-l subjecthdr
This is another way to change your settings so that the list name shows
up
in the subject line of each email.

Subject: I Need a Flour Barrel
Hey all:
Can anyone advise me where I can lay hands on a reproduction flour
barrel of the type that was around in the 1830s-40s? I found one
on-line source for barrels but would like more options.
I'm also looking for a supplier for artificial wheat, both as threshed
grain and especially on the stalk.
Any help with these would be much appreciated.

Subject: Re: Combined Reading Room
Hi Valerie,
The Mission Houses Museum in Honolulu has a library that shares the same
Reading Room with the library of the Hawaiian Historical Society. They
are
separate organizations, with separate staff and processing areas. Their
collections are kept on two different sides of the library. The Museum
itself has a separate area for its collections. It is a rather unusual
situation, but has worked well for both organizations for many years.
It's
actually great for researchers because they actually have two great
resources under one roof.
I'm sure the librarians at both places would be happy to share their
experiences with you. Their websites are:
