An excellent source of all sorts of information about traveling exhibits is
the new book by Rebecca Buck and Jean Gilmore, On the Road Again: Developing
and Managing Traveling Exhibitions (do not leave home without it).

Subject: traveling exhibits
We are just beginning a traveling exhibits program that will include
artifacts. These will be small exhibits traveling mostly to local histor=
y
museums around the state. I wanted to know if anyone had any guidelines=
for when a Curator or Collections Manager needed to travel with the
artifacts and when it would be okay for artifacts to be shipped to the =
borrowing museum and unpacked by their staff. Would someone from
Collections need to accompany only fragile objects, or would they need to=
go any time artifacts travel? What other factors do we need to consider?=
Most of the places that would get these exhibits would be small, with ver=
y
limited budgets, so we are trying to keep expenses down for them. Thanks=
for your help.
