The Graduate School of Library and Information Science,  

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, is pleased to 

announce the following Book Arts workshops workshops:



July 22 - Historic Binding Structures: Coptic Bindings- 

taught by Jennifer Hain Teper.   Coptic bindings are the 

oldest “codex” style book structure, In this workshop, 

participants will create their own Coptic style bindings, 

including oak boards and braided headbands. ($109 includes 

$20 material fee) Class size limited to 15.



September 30 - Multiple Needle Sewn Book with Paper 

slipcase – taught by Bea Nettles (6 hours, $109 includes $15 

material fee)  Students will learn the how to sew a book of 

several sections using an exposed spine stitch with multiple 

needles. A custom made paper slipcase will be created to 

house your creation. A beautiful selection of appropriate 

papers will be provided. A good class for beginners, but 

repeat students to Nettles' workshops will learn several new 

skills. Class size limited to 15.



October 28 - Organization and Preservation of Your Family 

Treasures taught by Tom Teper and Chris Prom (6 hours, $89)

Offered in a morning and afternoon session, this workshop 

will discuss the fundamentals of organizing and preserving 

your family treasures. The morning session will focus on the 

basics of organizing and describing your family’s personal 

papers and artifacts. The afternoon session will focus on 

the basics of preserving these items, discussing appropriate 

storage materials and housing, improving the environment to 

house your collections when a perfect environment might not 

be available and working with conservators to conserve those 

extra special pieces.
