An exceptional job opportunity with the Virginia Museum of Natural History 
is now available.  The mission of the Virginia Museum of Natural History is 
to interpret Virginia’s natural heritage within a global context in ways 
that are relevant to all the citizens of the Commonwealth.  


The Virginia Museum of Natural History is the official state repository of 
natural history specimens; current holdings include a total of several 
million specimens representing a wide range of disciplines and storage 
requirements:  vertebrate and invertebrate biology (wet and dry), geology, 
invertebrate and vertebrate paleontology, and anthropology.  Located in 
beautiful southern Virginia, VMNH is constructing a new 90,000 square foot 
purpose-built facility, which is scheduled to open in the Fall of 2006.

As Collections Manager, you will be responsible for day-to-day management 
of the collections; overseeing environmental monitoring and pest 
management; catalog data entry/editing; and the supervision of the 
Registrar, the Librarian, and volunteer staff.


The position requires the ability to catalog a wide variety of natural 
history materials; experience in collections care and maintenance; 
attention to detail and accuracy; excellent written and verbal 
communications skills; excellent project management skills; and 
demonstrated proficiency with database software and Microsoft Office 
programs.  Knowledge of collections software including Re:Discovery and 
Specify would be an advantage.  


A degree in biological or geological sciences and a Master’s degree in 
Museum Studies is preferred.


The Collections Manager will be heavily involved in assisting with the move 
of the collections to the new building.  The move is expected to take a 
minimum of two (2) years to accomplish.
