There is a wonderful little museum in Hot Springs, South Dakota that has a 
wonderful little interactive for kids to do archaeology.  The Mammoth Site 
had a large sandbox sectioned off so children could work in their own areas. 
  Inside each section was a bone or other artifact that the kids could look 
for.  The museum supplied trowls, brushes and a brief description of the 
proper way of looking for artifacts in the ground.  Their website is:

I have not been to their museum for several years but each time I return 
they have many more creative ideas for the kids to enjoy.
