During the 50th anniversary year (2000) at the Tweed Museum of Art, and
several times since, we have used what we call "community curators" to
work with our curatorial staff to select objects from our collections
for ancillary exhibitions, which are intended to be seen alongside of
larger exhibitions and somehow mirror or extend their theme.
We also asked these "community curators," who were often artists,
collectors, and/or educators, to write an introductory label explaining
why they chose certain objects.
Any program like this needs to be closely monitored by staff, but it
has proven to be another good way to give the community a voice in our
program.
